The Sam Eppolito Award was created in 1965, following the death in October 1964 of longtime coach and school administrator Samuel R. Eppolito. The award has been given each year to the athletes who are the most driven in sports, and embolden the values of Eppolito.
From its initial awarding in 1965 through 1977, the award was given to a male athlete only. By 1977, there had been at least a few years' worth of female athletes who had gone through an entire high school career in girls' sports. Since 1978, the award has been given to a male and a female recipient.
The list will be updated yearly to add new recipients of the award.
