By Morris Rote-Rosen
From Dr. Charles T. Fake, Bay Shore, N. Y.: "Although it has been 16 years since I left Granville, the Sentinel has interested me weekly here on Long Island. I missed your "Main Street" when it did not appear in the Sentinel and I am glad that you are back. I notice in the November 13 issue your 'escape from the bull' and want to correct one impression you give. It has been proven beyond doubt that the bull can not distinguish color. You were just something moving he could chase. So do not discard that shirt." ... Thanks Dr. Fake. We promise to keep our shirt on.

Edna Roberts Murphy was not the only one who phoned, during the week of the royal wedding, to learn the name of the British royal family. Prior to 1917 the name of the royal family was the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha of German origin. In 1917, during the war with Germany, the name was changed to that of the House of Windsor ... Not to be outdone by the many fine improvements in our business section Uncle Sam is applying a new coat of paint and polish to our attractive post office in keeping with the spirit of Granville.

The headaches of holding public office were best summed up in a few words by Dr. W. E. Owen, village trustee, whom we overheard saying: "As a village trustee, God knows, that I have tried to be fair. But for seven years, I have made nothing but enemies and I lost some good friends, for trying to do my duty. I don't care whether friend or foe, I tried to be on the level with every one. I have served on the village board seven years and that is why I am through with public office" ... And if Dr. Owen means what he says, and there is no reason to doubt him, the people of Granville will lose a village trustee who served honestly and efficiently for the best interests of the people of our village.

While attending a meeting of the Chapter of DeMolay in the Granville lodge rooms, we called the attention of Dr. A.G. Barrett to an official chair occupied by Royal Hanna. "Remember," we asked Dr. Barrett, "when that boy's grandfather, Roy N. Hanna, sat in the very same chair?" Dr. Barrett thought a moment, shook his head and whispered, "It was only yesterday, only yesterday." .... And if young Royal follows in his grandfather's footsteps he will be an outstanding citizen in our community. There never lived a finer man in Granville than Roy N. Hanna.

John D. Kelley: Thanks. Nice to be rubbing elbows - or type - with "Listen Folks" once more ... The Captain John Early episode occurred during the years 1909-1910 when he was stationed in Granville with the Salvation Army. He broke out with the disease which baffled the leading dermatologists in the United States, and Early was forced to undergo hardships, abuse and deprivations, in and out of contagious disease hospitals, even being isolated in a leper's colony in Louisiana. He was finally diagnosed as not suffering from leprosy after all. His case you will recall made sensational headlines in the daily newspapers.

Fred W. Ladd, old time athlete, shuffling in the street said: "I am now 72 and I never thought I would go beyond 65". And it looks as if Fred had a few more good rounds left in him ... Frank B. Allen: Thanks for the San Diego Union, Sunday newspaper. When are you coming back home where you belong? ... Gurdon Stevens delivered the liquid punch for the firemen's dinner at Grange hall in his undertaker's ambulance but drove away without any "stiffs" ... And until you see Ted Lutz and Don Reynolds dance to the tune of the "Beer Barrel Polka," you hain't seen nothin yet.

Mayor Ted Brown dishing out some fatherly advice to Richard W. Stanton and telling him that life begins at fifty ... Does it "Ted"? Try to convince E. G. Barrow of it ... Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. for adding another "brother" to the Weiner brothers firm ... The 1948 Granville tax rate has been raised by the county board of supervisors from $28 to $36 per $1,000 valuation and it looks now all the total town, school and village tax rate for the coming year will hit an all time high of close to $90 per $1,000 assessment.

Have you contributed to the Fred Thompson Christmas Fund? Saturday December 20 is the dead line. Will you help bring a little cheer to a forgotten man on Christmas Day? ... Now to get the record straight. We mentioned Gardner Norton doing a square dance with Marguerite Carroll instead of Irene. Not that Romaine Bascom would object, but he and Marguerite Carroll Bascom probably were home just then watching over their lovely little daughter, while Gardner was whirling Irene around the high school gymnasium floor Hallowe'en night.

Has Granville a traffic problem? Police Officer Richard W. Stanton made his rounds up and down the Main street, between the hours of 9 and 11 o'clock on the morning of November 18 and he counted forty three dead storage cars belonging to those engaged in work on Main street, the cars parked for the day, thereby keeping out legitimate business traffic from finding a parking place. Isn't it time that the village trustees took a definite stand since all their pleadings have failed? Rutland found a remedy. Why not Granville?

Some facts about Moses W. Freydberg: He was the last of the immigrant Jewish merchants in Granville ... His first store was the block of John Hayes, father of Lawrence Hayes ... Now, Lawrence is in the Freydberg block, which Lawrence purchased ... Mr. and Mrs. Freydberg were married 53 years ago ... Although Moses W. Freydberg and Abram Rote-Rosen were close friends for more than forty years, they always referred to each other, when carrying on a conversation, as "Mr.", never by their first names ... Moses Freydberg's name was Zarchy and he changed it to Freydberg, his mother's family name "because Zarchy was a hard name to spell."

Freydberg was in business on the Main street for fifty-eight years. His reputation for honesty was a byword among his customers for more than half a century ... Never a social mixer he and Mrs. Freydberg lived for each other with a slogan of "we mind our own business" ... And they lived up to it ... Being a member of the Jewish Orthodox religious faith and a descendant of the Levites who, in ancient times were assisting the high priests in the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Jerusalem, before its destruction, he observed the strict biblical tradition of "cleanliness" by never entering a home of the dead, or cemetery. He could be seen standing near-by. on the outside during the service.

News oddity: Rev. Howard L. Pichard, general representative in Toledo, for the Ohio District, of the Anti-Saloon League, pleaded guilty for driving while intoxicated ... Another oddity: A former Granville man, who tried to shout "law enforcement" from our village house-tops, was fined $100 for killing a deer with short horns, two weeks ago. My, oh, my! ... And another odd item is the poorly attended dance at Corinthian hall in Middle Granville given by the Rhythmasters for the benefit of the hospital ... Isn't it odd that when a group of musicians are willing to offer their music for a worthy cause, the dancers will not. Try it again (this) Monday evening, December 8, and help the hospital.
