Merchants in 1971 offered Granville Christmas joy
By Erik Pekar, Town Historian
The Christmas holiday season is here, and Christmas Day is getting closer, being a week from this Saturday. Let’s look back on how the Granville merchants of 1971 gave Christmas greetings and messages in their advertisements in the Dec. 23, 1971 issue of the Sentinel.
Some businesses gave simple greetings, with the more significant message in their advertisements being that they still had good inventory for Christmas gifts. The ad for the L.E. Roberts jewelry store had only “Christmas Greetings” and Wilson’s referred to itself as “Your Christmas Store.” Grand Union’s distributed ad also had a short message, “Season’s Greetings.”
Granville Pharmacy: “Noel – Christmas! That special time of the year. A time when families and friends gather together to share and enjoy the season. And a time when we give special thanks.”
Harry’s Restaurant: “Hearty Christmas Greetings – To our many loyal patrons, we wish a generous serving of Christmas peace, joy and happiness.”
Edwards Supermarket: “Greetings – Santa’s helping us wrap up Christmas wishes to all our friends and neighbors, plus our appreciation, too.”
Grastorf Press: “Greetings – Christmas is a warm holiday when families share in festive preparations . . . here’s hoping yours is happiest ever.”
First National Bank of Glens Falls, Granville Office: “Christmas Greetings – When the crisp fragrance of evergreens scents the air . . . when the lights of the holiday home say, “Welcome” . . . that’s Christmas! Hoping it’s merry and bright, full of delight, for our appreciated patrons, we send greetings and gratitude.”
Ross Pontiac: “Greetings – Jolly spirits, happy times and the best of Christmas cheer are what we’re wishing you, with our appreciation for your kind patronage.”
Robert M. King Funeral Home: “Christmas Greetings – May sleighbells, laughter and the splendor of a snowy countryside bring you happy joys and a memorable Christmas.”
Granville Gasoline and Oil Co., Inc.: “Merry Christmas to all! To each of you, a holiday filled with its own special excitement and enchantment. From us, many thanks for your patronage.”
MacEachron Motors: “Merry Christmas – Christmas! The very word awakens a host of happy expectations, with its promise of gifts and gladness, greetings and treatings. Enjoy it to the full, good friends. We thank you, warmly.”
Hughes Service Station: “Greetings – Santa’s coming along spreading lots of holiday cheer. And he’s delivering special thanks to our nice friends.”

Ranin Fuels: “May the happiness and joy of the season touch every home, each family. We thank all our friends and neighbors for their loyal patronage.”
Dominick’s Cleaners: “Greetings – Here’s hoping you have a very Merry Christmas.”
Telescope Folding Furniture Co., Inc.: “Merry, Merry Christmas – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Santa’s all decked out and ready to bring bundles of goodies your way for a happy holiday. And, tucked into his sack are hearty thanks from us, along with jolliest wishes for a merry, merry Christmas season.”
John Holmes Andrus, real estate broker: “Greetings – There’s no place like home to have a merry, merry Yule. And that’s why we’re so very happy to serve friends like you!”
